Indonesian Evening 2011: Exploring Eastern Indonesia

Persatuan Pelajar Indonesia Enschede (PPIE) pada 20 Oktober 2011 kembali mengadakan acara budaya tahunan di University of Twente (UT). Acara yang bertajuk Indonesian Evening 2011 mengangkat tema ‘Exploring Eastern Indonesia’. Ini kali ketiga PPIE mengadakan kegiatan sejenis. Pada tahun 2009, PPIE mengangkat tema mengenai pulau Kalimantan. Lalu di tahun berikutnya pulau Jawa menjadi tema utama dalam Indonesian Evening 2010. Untuk tahun ini PPIE menggali kekayaan budaya dan pariwisata dari Indonesia bagian Timur. Tiga pulau utama yang menjadi sorotan utama pada kegiatan tahun ini adalah Sulawesi, Maluku, dan Papua. Acara ini bertujuan untuk mengenalkan lebih dekat tentang kekayaan budaya dan sumber daya alam Indonesia bagian timur kepada civitas akademika di University of Twente, dan masyarakat yang tinggal di Enschede pada umumnya.

Berbagai kegiatan seni budaya ditampilkan dalam acara ini. Tari Sajojo disuguhkan sebagai pembuka acara ini. PPIE juga menyuguhkan beberapa tarian lainnya dari Indonesia Timur seperti tari Toki Gaba-gaba, tari Tifa, tari Sayange, dan tari Mande-mande. Tidak hanya itu, dalam acara ini juga ditampilkan musikalisasi puisi ‘Nonton La Galigo’ asal Bugis. Penampilan kelompok musik dari mahasiswa Indonesia di Enschede juga turut memeriahkan acara ini. Mereka membawakan beberapa lagu daerah dengan aransemen musik moderen yang cukup unik, seperti lagu Angin Mamiri, Enggo Lari, dan Mari Kemari.

Dalam acara ini pengunjung juga dapat menggali informasi lebih dalam mengenai keanekaragaman budaya dan pariwisata dari Sulawesi, Maluku, dan Papua melalui ‘information booths’ yang disediakan dalam acara ini. Pengunjung juga dapat mencicipi cita rasa kuliner khas Indonesia bagian Timur. Berbagai jenis makanan tradisional dijajakan dalam acara ini seperti Coto Makassar, Nasi Kacang, Ayam Rica-rica, Tinutuan, dan lain sebagainya. Tidak kurang dari 150 pengunjung meramaikan acara yang dimulai dari pukul 6 sore hingga 9 malam ini. Kebanyakan dari mereka adalah para mahasiswa University of Twente yang berasal dari berbagai Negara. Beberapa staf akademik juga turut serta hadir dalam acara ini. Selain itu beberapa staf University of Twente terlihat hadir dalam acara ini.

Apresiasi yang tinggi dan dukungan penuh sangat diberikan oleh pihak International Office UT. Hal tersebut dikarenakan kegiatan yang diadakan oleh PPIE sangat mendukung program internasionalisasi yang gencar sedang dilakukan oleh pihak UT. Pihak Kedutaan Besar Indonesia di Den Haag juga memberikan dukungan kepada PPIE untuk menyelenggarakan kegiatan budaya seperti ini. Beberapa pejabat dan staf KBRI tampak hadir dalam acara ini.

Open House University of Twente-Experiment In Het Bos

University of Twente (UT) baru saja mengadakan Open House pada 17 September 2011 yang lalu. Kegiatan tersebut bertempat di dalam lingkungan kampus UT, Enschede. UT Open House diselenggarakan dalam rangkaian kegiatan ‘Experiment Het Bos‘ dari tanggal 5-22 September 2011 yang merupakan bagian dari perayaan 50 tahun berdirinya UT. Dalam kegiatan ini seluruh institusi penelitian yang berada di UT mempresentasikan hasil-hasil penelitiannya, dari mulai mobil bertenaga surya, pemetaan digital, teknologi ramah lingkungan, hingga mainan edukasi untuk anak-anak. Mereka mempresentasikan hasil karya penelitian dalam dome yang didirikan di halaman kampus UT. Hal tersebut menjadi daya tarik tersendiri dalam kegiatan ini.

Dalam UT Open House, hampir seluruh fasilitas yang ada di UT, dari mulai fakultas beserta gedung perkuliahannya, laboratorium, hingga fasilitas kegiatan kemahasiswaan dibuka untuk umum. Para pengelola fakultas, dosen, peneliti dan mahasiswanya turut ambil bagian dalam Open House ini dengan menyelenggarakan beberapa kegiatan seperti kuliah umum, kunjungan ke laboratorium, serta demonstrasi alat-alat penelitian. Pengunjung dalam kegiatan tersebut tidak hanya para siswa yang memiliki minat untuk melanjutkan kuiah di UT, namun juga anak-anak beserta para orang tuanya.

Pusat kebudayaan dan olahraga UT juga tidak ingin ketinggalan dalam memeriahkan UT Open House ini. Sejumlah kelompok musik modern menunjukan kebolehannya di panggung outdoor yang di sediakan dalam Open House ini. Tidak hanya itu, para pengunjung juga disuguhkan beberapa tarian modern. Selanjutnya, bagi pengunjung yang ingin menguji adrenalinnya dapat mencoba panjat tebing pada tempat yang telah disediakan dengan bimbingan trainer yang sudah ahli dibidangnya. Hal menarik lain yang disuguhkan adalah kegiatan panahan. Pengunjung yang belum pernah mencoba olaharaga panahan dapat mencobanya dalam kegiatan ini secara cuma-cuma.

Persatuan Pelajar Indonesia Enschede (PPIE) yang merupakan salah organisasi mahasiswa yang cukup besar di UT turut ambil bagian dalam kegiatan ini. PPIE menyediakan meja informasi yang berisi paparan tentang kegaitan pariwisata di Indonesia. PPIE menyediakan berbagai brosur dan booklet tentang pariwisata di Indonesia dalam Bahasa Inggris dan Belanda. Untuk menarik pengunjung, PPIE juga menampilkan audio-visual tentang pariwisita di Indonesia. Tidak hanya itu, PPIE juga mengadakan beberapa permainan tradisional asal Indonesia-bakiak dan egrang-untuk di coba oleh para pengunjung. Para pengunjung Open House ini sangat menaruh perhatian yang cukup tinggi pada pariwisata Indonesia. Tentunya mereka sangat senang dapat mencoba permainan khas Indonesia yang disuguhkan oleh PPIE.

Bicycle Beauty

The Netherlands — a small country with its capital city Amsterdam, become the icon of “The Bike City” in the world, since nearly 40 percent of the traffic in the city counts only for bike. Not only in Amsterdam, but most in every city in the Netherlands, people ride a bike, everywhere. Most in every corner of the streets, you can see those bikes along side with the other motorized vehicles. The Dutch become one of the leading example to many countries, how to educate their citizen, not only support green environment, but also to live more healthy and happier life. The Dutch biking culture not happens in a blink of an eye. This is the result of continuous push to promote cycling, by providing: separated bike lanes, designated parking in public areas until earlier campaigns for children at school.

Hopefully, in the near future, Indonesia will also adapt this healthy culture – by the will of its Indonesian people with the full support by the Indonesian Government, e.g: provide bike lanes and public parking for bikes.

39th Batavierenrace

Batavierenrace, the annual event of a relay race over 180 km from Nijmegen to Enschede will be held on the 7th of May 2011, this year is the 39th edition of the Batavierenrace. The race starts at midnight near the University Sports Centre of Nijmegen. A unique feature of the the Batavierenrace is that part of the race takes place during the night. The finish of the race will be on the campus of the University of Twente. and continues with the party.

The route of the Batavierenrace goes over more than 180 kilometers and contains 25 stages, of which 17 are men’s and 8 are women’s stages varying from 3.3 km to 11.2 km. There are also three shifts, a night- (stage 1-9), morning- (stage 10-17) and dayshift (stage 18-25).

After the race, the afterparty for the “Batavierenrace” will be held on Saturday, 7th May 2011. The party is one of the biggest party’s in Europe with an estimate over than 12,000 visitors. The party is situated in different locations of the the University of Twente, Enschede.

International Summer School on Entrepreneurship & Technology Venturing

NIKOS (Netherlands Institute for Knowledge Intensive Entrepreneurship) the University of Twente’s expert centre for technology based entrepreneurship will organizes International summer school on Entrepreneurship & Technology Venturing for (aspiring) entrepreneurs and for business development support professionals between 20th of June until 1st of July 2011.

This summer school is the first edition and will be divided into two :

For (aspiring) entrepreneurs: How to create a successful business?
20 June – 24 June 2011
For business development support professionals: How to support entrepreneurship?
27 June – 1 July 2011

The participant can register fo both summer school. Application is opened now and the deadline of the application is 1st of May.

UT Is The Gate Towards Global Journey

Having a Bachelor degree in Computer Science from Indonesia, didnʼt make me want to spend all the precious time only behind the computer. I want to meet new people and I love traveling. And these brought me to the ﬁrst acquaintanceship with University of Twente.

In 2006, with the help of an Internet search engine, I found a Master program that suits me very much, Business Information Technology. There I read how in this program I can obtain and exercise broad knowledge in both business and IT areas, as I didnʼt want to let go my IT background. And indeed it was completely true. Started in 2008, I followed and ﬁnished this 2 years program with joy and excitement. Being in Europe for the ﬁrst time and meeting lots of International students and staffs, make the time ﬂies so quickly. UT also offered many meaningful activities for both my professional experience and personal development. Growing as new person, especially becoming more conﬁdent in many ways, is one of important beneﬁts I got here. Both hard and soft skills are important.

Good networks being had by the teachers, both in academic and practical worlds, also help me to be exposed to broad high-end industries in Europe. By the time I need to write my Master thesis, I managed to do a project with one of the biggest Telecommunication
companies in the world located in Germany. This practical experience deﬁnitely adds-up the value achieved beyond my academic records.

Currently, with the degree I got from University of Twente, I managed to land my ﬁrst professional job in Europe, as an IT Auditor in one of the biggest multinational company in Germany. I believe the brand of this university very much help me to get this job, as many companies in Europe already acknowledged the good quality of its graduates.

In summary, I would say that studying at University of Twente gives me, and you of course, high values for both personal and professional career development. Living in The Netherlands along my study period also exposes me to the gate of success in Europe, and
even globally. So, donʼt wait too long, because University of Twente is the answer for your questions!
